Hi Class,

1. Please read chapters 16, 17 and 18 in "Where the Red Fern Grows."

2. Please also find every instance in the book so far, where Billy's ax is used or mentioned. Based on the repeated usage of the ax, we can conclude that it is a literary symbol. The author is using it to represent an idea or set of ideas.

3.Once you've located each time the author has mentioned the ax, address the following in writing:

What abstract idea or concept does the ax seem to represent? Why do you say this?  Please use specific examples from the novel, in complete sentences, to support your argument. You should use at least twenty complete sentences to express your thoughts.

4. Also, please list three examples, in complete sentences, of ethical behavior, and three examples of unethical behavior in the book.  Please explain, in complete sentences, why you consider each of your examples ethical or unethical.

5. Please find a real life example, either in history, or the present, of something YOU feel is unethical, that was/is legal.  Write about what you can do/could have done back then to help change the law. Can one person make a difference?
