This course is the last one before we start algebra, and at this stage students must be able to freely operate and apply the laws and concepts of arithmetic, even the most elaborate ones. The program teaches laws of arithmetic, now extended to variables, showing how the laws of arithmetic work universally.
Operations with common and decimal fractions, concepts of ratio, proportion, percentage, rate, distance and time problems, and operations with them are presented in depth. As well as acquiring expertise in the calculations required in these problems students now must master difficult word problems on these topics, using all their techniques of arithmetic.
The goal of the Grade 6 program is to deepen and solidify all aspects of arithmetics, especially word problems, so that the student will easily be able to handle such problems at the algebraic level. The program includes plenty of such problems and elaborates on various methods of solving them.
In addition to advanced Arithmetic, the program includes several exciting enrichment topics such as Logic problems and games, Combinatorics, Prime numbers, Rules of divisibility, and many exciting puzzles which kids always enjoy.
This program is aligned with focal points of Standards for School Mathematics developed by National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).
